“My grandmother..recently passed away. She passed away 4 weeks ago. But she always had a white towel on her head. Do you know why? She’d feed me rice and rip some kimchi. Then she’d wipe her fingers on that towel. Then she’d rip some more kimchi and wipe it again. I thought that was dirty then. She was trying to be as sanitary as possible. She can’t keep returning to the water, you know? I told her I thought it was dirty. I had thought so, then. After time had passed, [I realized] that was the best taste. But I can’t taste that any longer. I was so immature. And I’m so sorry to her. I was sad. If I think about it now, I want to cry. She passed away 4 weeks ago. Has it been 4 weeks? 5 weeks? I was very sad. To my grandmother..I think of that. I think of that a lot. That’s the first thing I thought of in front of her funeral portrait. I was so embarrased with myself. That was love but I didn’t know it. That was her love for her grandson. She showed a mother’s affection to a boy living apart from his mom. It had never crossed my mind.”
